A brilliantly depraved clip from a childrens' TV show. I'm not sure if I should be glad it wasn't meant to be aired or not.

Still Alive [Friday Nov 12th 2004, 12:54]
Yes, it's been ages since I've posted anything. Guess why?

Nothing's happening.

Okay, that's not entirely true. I've applied for a bunch of jobs, with the best result being "we'll keep your application on file". I'm taking an English course at the university, mostly to have something to put on my job applications and to learn when to use "that" and when to use "which" in relative clauses. I've been watching CSI like crazy (two seasons in just over a week).

And I've been playing poker. I finally got my bankroll to a level where I could start playing $.50/$1 at Party, and the fish are biting. When I started playing there I had about $175, and now, after playing there for less than 20 hours, I have twice that. (Okay, so I spent about $70 on Poker Tracker, but that was worth every penny.)

Unless this is some kind of fluke I could actually do this for a living. That would be way cool.

General Update Part Whatever [Wednesday Sep 8th 2004, 22:01]
I've been spending money hand over fist the past week. Mostly because I finally got off my lazy ass and ordered a new computer, which will set me back [CENSORED].

Also, games: 4th edition of GURPS (which seems pretty sweet - I've only very hastily skimmed both books, but they seem good) and Paranoia XP (which I got just today and haven't opened yet); comics: two Boondocks collections and a big Get Fuzzy collection.

Not many movies though. I got a good deal on X-Men 2, and I think Kill Bill vol. 2 is supposed to have shown up by now, so I guess I'll get that too.

I'm not doing great at poker, but not too bad either. I'm fluctuating between $30 and $40 (from the free $10 I started with). It's still fun, though. The book has helped quite a lot with showing me what mistakes I make. Now I just need to stop doing them.

Other than that, there's not a whole lot going on here. Steady as she goes.

General Update [Friday Aug 27th 2004, 00:24]
I was supposed to meet with my job administration person today. Or so I thought. But when I arrived there, the incredibly snarky guy at the reception told me I should just send a mail. Oh no, not to the person I had contact with before. She's not working there anymore. I had to send a mail about not having found a job (because there are fuck-all jobs to find) to a complete stranger, who may also be a snarky bastard. Grrr.

I registered for a course in English grammar yesterday. I doubt I'll learn much (except maybe when to use "that" and when to use "which"), but it would be nice to have on paper that I know English. And I need to be registered for a course to keep my Internet connection anyway.

We played another session of the rebooted HERO superhero campaign today. It was kind of meh, but mostly because I'm getting fed up with the system. I like how it's designed, and I like making characters for it, but it's a royal pain in the ass in play. It's extra annoying because the campaign promises to be interesting.

I'm eagerly awaiting my 4th edition GURPS basic set, which should arrive Any Day Now. Or "any week", at least. The LFGS doesn't order new stuff too often.

I bought the new WoD and Vampire books. The WoD books seems pretty good. I haven't read much of the Vampire book, but it seems okay. Not super good, not super bad.

I also bought the new Thursday Next book, Something Rotten. I've only read a few pages and I've already laughed out loud several times. It is my precious today.

I've been rereading some of my comics. Bendis's Alias is very good. I'll have to replace my singles with trades when I get a job.

The poker hasn't gone very well the last few days. I've ordered a book that should arrive sometime next week that will hopefully help a bit. It's fun to play, but it's more fun to win than to lose. :)

I'm still playing a lot of Diablo II. I've got about ten characters I switch between to keep from getting bored with playing the same one all the time. So far it seems to be working.

I've also started playing Kingdom of Loathing, which is far more fun than it should be. My character is a fourth level Seal Clubber who keeps getting his ass kicked by the Knob Goblin Chefs.

Dad called the other day. His lady is not well. She has this chronic respiratory problem thingy. It's sad - not so much for her sake; I don't know her well enough to feel sorry for her, really - but he needs her.

I still want to play Runebound, especially after reading up on some of the house rules people have come up with to counter some of the (possibly minor, possibly major) problems with the game.

I still haven't ordered a new computer. I'm kinda reluctant since it's such a big expense, but I do need to get one. This one's getting moodier by the day and I suspect it will start having serious problems sooner rather than later.

General Update [Sunday Aug 22nd 2004, 23:22]
Still no job. I'm seeing my contact person at the job administration thingy this week, and I'm going to send off and application for a not-ideal-but-probably-okay-job.

I'm getting pretty good at the poker thing. The ten bucks I got for signing up have acquired over 30 new little friends, and that's with just some basic instructions from a guy who knows this better than I do. I'll be getting a book soon.

I've been playing a lot of Diablo II lately. The PlugY mod is awesome. (It gives you practically unlimited storage space, and allows you to painlessly share equipment between characters.) I'm also using a mod that improves treasure drops so you don't have to kill Diablo over and over and over again to get quality items.

Not much gaming lately, mostly because of the slew of birthdays that my gamer friends have in August, with several of them turning 30 this year.

However, I bought Runebound about a week ago, and that seems good. It's a Talisman-ish boardgame - you run around killing stuff, collecting equipment and experience so you can kill more stuff, and so on. However, Runebound has a much better basic design than Talisman. The combat system is quite nicely done, and there's a sense of story that you never get in Talisman (or most other games of that type). The one thing I don't like is that the equipment cards (items and allies) seem to be disproportionately important: getting good items and good allies seem to have a very large influence on your chances of winning the game. This is mitigated somewhat by the fact that you can jump another player character and steal stuff from him (and this part also seems well done), but I'm not sure that's enough. However, if this turns out to be a problem it's easy enough to remove the worst offenders from the cards - there are plenty of equipment cards, far more than you'll go through in one game. I'm looking forward to playing this with live opponents. (This and the half-dozen other games I haven't played yet but really want to try... and the dozens of games I have played and want to play more...)

Webcomic Recommendation [Sunday Aug 22nd 2004, 22:53]
Get thee hence and read Irregular Webcomic!

It has everything a geek could want - cheesy Star Wars references, cheesy gaming references (and sometimes both at the same time!) and really, really horrible puns.

Plus bikini-clad elf maidens and sneering Nazi scientists. And that Australian croc-annoying guy.
